Board Meeting Minutes: January 4, 2011

All members of the BOARD except Teresa Zuniga were present. Deborah Hudson was also present.
  1. Conditional Use Permit (CUP) for 522 S 5th St to be a Guest House, Large. This house got the attention of the City because of code and safety violations. The house is currently a private residence, but the more than ten unrelated occupants cannot continue to live in there legally without a CUP. The house administrator has approached the SUN board seeking support for the CUP application. Supporting the application would potentially go against SUN's priority to prohibit uses which are not compatible with our predominantly single family historic neighborhood. On the other hand the house has been operating in this way for the past 19 years. The board voted to table making a decision until gathering more data about the past operation of the house.
  2. Dumpster day(s). Mike Schmidt agreed to coordinate dumpster day again this year. The complication this year is that there is a funded, city wide (zone 86) dumpster day on April 9, and that SUN has a CAP grant for its own dumpster day that may have to be used by the end of June. Mike was concerned that neighbors will not accumulate enough to fill the dumpsters in less than two months, so he is going to try to push out the date of the second dumpster day if possible.
  3. Neighborhood yard sale. The board discussed the following options:
    • a. SUN would provide publicity, but it would be up to neighbors to organize their own yard sales, either individually or in small groups. Easier for the sellers, but not so easy for the buyers who have to travel round the neighborhood looking for what they want.
    • b. SUN would close off a street for a central Yard Sale. Easier for the buyers, but not so easy for the sellers, who have to transport what they want to sell. Also closing a street needs written permission from every resident of the street, which may be difficult.
    • c. Find a private location for a central Yard Sale, for example a school or church parking lot.
    • d. Coordinate the date of the Yard Sale with Dumpster Day. Would it be good or bad to have the same date
    • The board made no decision, but suggested seeking feedback at the next general meeting.
  4. Mike Schmidt agreed to write the grant request in the next cycle (25). The main expenses of the association are dumpster day, food for social events, printer supplies for fliers, UNSCC dues (, and paint to cover graffiti.
  5. Fliers. One suggestion was to distribute a flier with a neighborhood calendar that neighbors might keep. The plan is to distribute a flier before the next general meeting that advertises the web site.
  6. Community Liaison Ayse Purcell will be moving outside the neighborhood so she will be leaving the board,
