  • Neighborhood socials Each year we have several neighborhood socials including the June Ice Cream Social with Elections, National Night Out, the social after the Neighborhood Yard Sale and the Halloween Social. At the Halloween Social in 2011 over 400 people attended.

  • Block Captain Program What does a block captain do? Attend neighborhood meetings whenever possible (10 scheduled meetings per year, usually at 7pm on the third Tuesday of the month at Lowell Elementary School) Act as the human connection between neighbors and the neighborhood association Distribute fliers the week before general meeting or events Talk to neighbors about the association and association's projects Report problems, issues or successes of your block to the neighborhood association How much time does it take? Probably less than one hour each month in addition to the neighborhood general meetings. What is a block captain’s term?   • Engagement with SJPD and SJSUPD Officers from both the San Jose Police Department and the San Jose State University Police Department routinely come to the General Meetings each month. They report on police issues in the neighborhood and answer neighbors questions.

  • Neighborhood-Wide Yard Sale Each year there is a neighborhood-wide Yard Sale. In 2011 we introduced the SUN Neighborhood Yard Sale Banner and had over 25 households participating, ending up with an ice cream social in the park.

  • Casa Feliz Studios Casa Feliz Studios is on the 600 block of 9th Street in SUN. It was built by First Community Housing, and replaced an old apartment building with no place for tenants to socialize other than the porch and sidewalk in front. The SUN Association had input into the design and landscape, and Sandra Soellner represented SUN on the Board of First Community Housing. It is a wonderful example of SUN working with developers to add housing that contributes to the ambiance of and quality of life for our neighborhood. First Community Housing was honored in November 2010 by having Casa Feliz Studios named “Best Rental Affordable Housing Project” by the Home Depot Foundation.  As part of this process, the Home ...
